The fact that you’re seeing this is proof that the blog isn’t over. It seems that even after composing what might be the most artistic thing I’ve ever done, as well as finishing countless narcissistic blog posts cataloguing my philosophy on clothing, that I can’t bring myself to stop yapping on here or on the pod.  However, this is still the start of a new era!

As we’ve finished covering big philosophical discussions (don’t hold us to that, it may still happen every once in a while), Spencer, MJ and I have decided to pivot the pod into something more casual. This means less single-theme podcasts and blog posts to make room for lighthearted conversation about menswear: our favorite outfits we wore that week, Menswear Media at large (and small), and of course how our clothing continually is in conversation with our immediate surroundings (friends, family, work, public).

It also goes without saying that despite blog being largely my own platform, I want to be able to give Spencer and MJ a space to share their experiences in menswear without being locked into the philosophical discussions that have characterized our output the past four years.  There’s also a lot of fun blog posts I post that do not get pod discussions and I want to make space for them! Think of it as a way for us to return the streams that we don’t really do anymore (sorry!).

And so now you can expect actual Show Notes to be posted on the blog: a brief recollection of what we talked about on the latest edition of the podcast. I hope you enjoy it! And if not…too bad. We’re still gonna do it anyway. Also because we’re all burned out from those big topics (I only have myself to blame).

In the latest podcast, we immediately start the casual discussion. This means talking through a few of our favorite outfits in recent history. While I’ve had a lot of great stuff, I thoroughly enjoyed the tonal trad outfit I wore to Friendsgiving a few weeks ago. It really was that good and considering how long it took to finally get “cold” here in SoCal, I always welcome the opportunity to wear a sweater vest.

On that note, I also share a bit about my recent trip to NYC. If you haven’t read it, you should as it provides better insight into my interactions with work and my internal debate on moving to New York. I also use it as fodder to get Spencer and MJ to come out with me next time. I think Nick would love to take them around and “force” them to stay out until 3AM. I still can’t believe I did that despite having work the next day! I guess that’s the true NYC experience, huh?

MJ talks about how much he’s been leaning into wearing jeans. This includes his rather spectacular wide leg ones from Uniqlo which due the pleats makes them more like denim trousers; that doesn’t’ stop MJ from wearing them casually as per his Own Style. He also has been making headway into adding his own fades to my old selvedge jeans from The Teenaged as well as the black wide leg pair from 3sixteen.

MJ has been digging jeans!

A decidedly casual look but with classic menswear proportions!
Making good use from my old Teen-aged jeans!
MJ is very cool.

That tidbit reminds me that I actually took my 3sixteen wide legs (they call them the “relaxed cut”) to the tailor and got them taken in at the waist/seat! I simply took them to my regular tailor and I think he did a fantastic job! I don’t really mind that it wasn’t done to the level of Self Edge; I just wanted my new black and indigo jeans to fit me properly. I mainly blame a bit of weight loss but I was already in between sizes. I opted for the bigger one as it also provided me with a higher rise!

All the jean talk lead to Spencer’s bombshell announcement that he has been favoring jeans less as of late. It’s actually not that bad, as he mainly wears denim around five times a week; he simply means that he’s been intentionally wearing trousers outside of situations that call for it (like a party or Going Out). This was mainly because he rediscovered a pair of 60s brown trousers in his archive (storage box in the garage) and got excited to wear them again. It’s certainly helped him lean into wearing ties and jackets again, though Spencer’s heart will always lie in being a bit more ruggedly casual.

[All of the jean talk makes me think that we should finally do a pod on denim. Maybe later this year? ]

I don’t have an updated fit pic with my jeans on hand, but you can see that in this old photo there’s a bit of excess fabric in the waist and hips!

Spencer loves jeans…

…but he’s been wearing proper trousers lately!
A full suit!

Over the past year, I noticed that perhaps my pants would benefit with a bit of extra length, to help them “rest” on my shoe.

Its far from a full break, but I think that the slightly longer length makes a difference! This is new for me!

The episode finishes off with me telling the story about how I lengthened all my pants (you can read the blog post here). It’s something that I’ve been hinting at on my instagram for a while, but now it’s got its own topic! I use the podcast to explain how I felt “off” about my pants and how I felt that lengthening a majority of them by about 1” was enough. You can actually read about the full analysis in THIS blog post, but it might be fun to hear me talk about it on the pod as a supplement!

It sounds wild that this took up an hour of discussion! I was honestly concerned that we wouldn’t be able to have enough for an episode but it’s clear that casual conversations about Menswear is perfectly fine! I was ready to talk about what it was like to take my friend Serhan shopping for menswear.  At a bar hang a few months ago, he revealed that he wanted to get a DB blazer after seeing Jack and I wear it. That led to him wanting to not only find a DB blazer (or even a DB suit) but to start adding intentional pieces to his wardrobe that would help support it! But that’s a story (and pod) for another time.

Also, Spencer recently watched The Parent Trap (1998).
He specifically enjoyed the barn coat + chambray button-down collar look!
Spencer saw it and then he did it! The power of inspiration!
And speaking of Inspiration, Spencer showed us some great yearbook scans from his work!

Not exactly ivy, but still good!
Crazy shirt!
Corduroy safari!

I wonder we’ll have the same fondness for 2020s yearbook photos.
Actually, I definitely think that college kids today would wear this exact outfit.
The 70s were great for what Lucas at Permanent Style calls a “stimulating shirt“.
Yowza!

2025 may be the year of the embroidered flannel shirt.

Did yearbooks always have great photography???

Steve Martin was quite ivy.
Some trad for y’all.

Bring back the BB!
